about

[no]objects debuted at the Random Sample art gallery in Nashville, TN on June 4, 2022 in the form of multimedia installation. Prints of 30, 4x6, photographs were framed and hung around the space along with 6 speakers and two subwoofers emitting the 59min 58sec sound piece on a loop.

The version presented on Bandcamp is the original conception, consisting of the original mix/master of the audio piece on CD paired with a print booklet of the photographs and conceptual information. Please note that the digital download also comes with a copy of the eBook. The catalog was made possible by Warm Milk Publishing.

[about]

[no]objects is an audiovisual work that explores experiential listening and viewing in their relationship to each other. A long-form sound piece is combined with a collection of 30 photographs to create an experience that encourages the audience to attempt to put aside the consideration of what the sounds and images refer to in order to consider the audiovisual event in and of itself.

[notes]

I began to try and conceive of a way to explore the phenomenon of acousmatic sound (a wholly auditory experience in which the “source” of the sounds is veiled) while also having a visual component that is somehow linked to the sounds themselves without outright revealing the nature of the physical source. My solution was to take the idea of the “sound object” and apply it to the visual medium to create what could perhaps be called an “image object,” an image that is viewed by “reduced looking” (as opposed to “reduced listening”) to target the image for itself, independent of origin or meaning. To further exaggerate upon the work being based on the idea of the sound object, I chose actual, physical objects as the “source” subjects for both the sound and photographs. Select photographs were also chosen to be submitted to various processes of image to sound conversion using spectrogram players and raw data conversion to create additional source fragments. The recorded piece was born out of a process of intuitive composition, using the photographs loosely as scores that dictated the processing and arrangement methods applied to the individual sonic fragments as well as the way in which the physical objects were interacted with. These fragments were then arranged and collaged together to form a singular entity, which along with the experience of the photographs form the
